POTW: February 6-11, 2023

0

We didn't call him the best prospect in Indiana for nothing!  Jalen Haralson is that man.  Fishers has had a number of tight losses, but when you have the best player on the floor the scales could easily flip in your favor when it matters most.

In an OT loss to Anderson, Haralson put his team on his back.  He already owned the school record for most points in a game, but he went ahead and broke it again with 48 points.  He also added 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.  Making Jalen Haralson the Courtside Indiana Player of the Week for the week of February 6-11, 2023.

Saturday Wrap Up

0

Game 1 Saturday was definitely interesting. It came with plenty of action on the offensive end for Michigan City, as well as a running clock for the entire second half. Senior guard Jamie Hodges had his arsenal on full display.

2023 Jamie Hodges - 5'10" Guard - Michigan City

  • In a week that saw Hodges drop 50, 30, and 33, he definitely has showed he can score the basketball. And this is something I feel like has never been in question. Can score easily from all 3 levels and has some real range from 3. Superb at getting to the rim and is capable of finishing over/around defenders as well as playing through contact. Just moves with ease when the ball is in his hands. Plays unselfish as well. Would love to see what he can do next year if someone gives him the opportunity.

2023 Briton Franklin - 6'2" Guard - Michigan City

  • High flyer who filled it up in this one complete with a 360 dunk. Had 23 and made it look easy. Everything from him was around the rim and attacking the paint. Relentless defender as well. Could definitely help a program at the next level.

2024 Matthew King - 6'3" Guard - Hammond Central

  • Deadly from 3, King is an athletic guard who can also attack the rim and finish. Went 9/10 from the stripe and made some big FTs down the stretch. Great on the break and also in the half court. Coaches looking for a knock down shooter, King is a good place to start.

2024 Justin Sims - 6'6" Forward - Chesterton

  • The Junior did most of his damage from the line in this one, going 13/16 and finishing with 20 points 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Works hard for post position and has gotten stronger as well. Hands are good as well as his feet. Makes quick decisions with the ball either to the basket or kicking back out which helps keep the defense on their toes. Did knock down a 3 also so he can be a threat from outside. Improving on the dribble drive from the perimeter, and is excellent in transition. Very capable shot blocker as well. Continues to impress.

2024 Tyler Parrish - 6'3" Guard - Chesterton

  • Saw some dog in him in this one, as well as some swagger. Loved gettin after it on D, and has accepted the challenge of being the man this year for the Trojans. Great leader who didn't back down. Solid at getting teammates involved and ran the offense efficiently. Capable outside shooter who was able to slice and dice his way through the D to finish at the rim on both sides. Knack for finishing over/through/around contact with his soft touch. 7/8 from the line as well. Rebounds position well. Big things ahead for the junior.

Game Takes: #1 Northwood 64 – Mishawaka 28

0

Once I had heard before warmups that the Cavemen would be without the services of starting senior guard Arthur Jones, as well as starting junior forward Brady Fisher, I knew it would be an uphill battle to an already very challenging game for them. On the other side, the #1 Panthers were hungry for another conference title, which was on the line. Led by seniors Ian Raasch and Cade Brenner, along with their solid role players, it was all Northwood.

Ian Raasch - Grace Commit -

  • Had it all on display in this one. Scored at all three levels, rebounded it well, and made some really nice passes so teammates could score. Outside shot is nice too. Really impressed with his defense. Locked up the point guard position with his length and athleticism. Gave Austin Cripe fits at West Noble last weekend. Definitely a player who has developed nicely over the last few seasons and a skill set that will transfer easily to the next level.

Cade Brenner - Huntington Commit -

  • Knocked some big shots down both off the dribble and coming off of screens. Big time shooter. Handles the ball well enough, but definitely a 2. Strong and can finish through contact at the rim. Moves well without the ball. Plays with a swagger and confidence that helps set him apart from who is defending him. Sneaky quick first step.

2025 Tyler Raasch - 6'8" Forward/Center - NorthWood

  •  Long with a little athleticism, Tyler is still pretty raw. Had a couple nice moves inside where he was able to finish with good touch. Good footwork too. Blocked a couple of shots and altered many more. Definite presence in the paint. Look for him to continue to add skill and strength over the coming years. Has Grace and Huntington offers already.

2024 Rasauun Johnson - 6'3" Guard - Mishawaka

  • High motor and works hard. Did all he could to help his team in this one. Doesn't lack confidence or grit. Made a couple nice plays where he got himself to the rim and finished through one. Also found his teammates for a couple buckets. Was held to 2 points in the first half and finished with 12. Rebounded position well. Just a tough night all around for the Cavemen.

NEXT UP:

NorthWood - Feb 14 vs Tippy Valley

Mishawaka - Feb 14 vs Adams

POTW: Week of January 30-February 4

0

Big games are nothing new these days for Jack Benter.  The 6'5" junior guard, who is headed to Purdue, stacks them up, but his outing vs. Columbus East was impressive.  43 points, including 9 made 3PTers, and 8 rebounds in Brownstown Central's 92-47 win.

Congratulations Jack Benter on being Courtside Indiana's Player of the Week for the week of January 30-February 4

Game Takes: Lawrence North 59, New Palestine 58

0

Without their leading scorer, Azavier Robinson, Lawrence North went on the road and handed New Palestine their first loss of the season.

  • New Pal, like a lot of teams, struggle vs. quickness, and it really only takes a couple of players in a rotation to get sped up to disrupt what a team is doing.  Driving gaps get wider, drives normally getting to the rim are a little wider.  Help arrives more quickly, creating more deflections.
  • Even with Robinson, LN isn't centered around one player.  Kobe Bowles orchestrates the offense for the most part, and his slippery, surgical attacks on the paint create openings, most of the times for others.  He's able to get to the paint even to get his own shot with a variety of finishes, and he's a willing passer with great vision.
    • LN shot well beyond the 3PT line, especially after the 1st quarter.  They had five different players hit 3PTers last night.
    • Bowles struggled to finish in the first half but got some traction in the second.
  • The spark for LN was Myles Baker.  He got to the basket often, then started to hit from outside as the game progressed.  He kept them afloat coming off the bench, early in the game, and in the second playing alongside Bowles was even better.
  • Ian Stephens was his usual versatile self for New Pal.  He makes plays on the both ends of the floor.  He hit from behind the 3PT line, a progressing skill for him.  He was contested at the rim a couple of times without the benefit of a foul, but LN has their fair share of players who can jump with him.
  • New Pal executes in the half court well.  They're a physical team.  Once LN was able to adjust and contest vertically, their athleticism made finishing around the basket tougher for New Pal.
    • Super impressed with the defense of Ty Cunningham, and LN has one of the best undersized rim protectors in Mase Hughes.

My Weekly Player Evaluations

0
  • 2023 Lukas Balling - 6'5" Forward - Marquette Catholic - 1K scorer who can stretch the floor with his outside shooting ability. Able to put the ball on the deck and get to the rack. Strong enough to finish through contact. Great from the line. Length helps him rebound, which he does well. Able to post and score or distribute. Would be a solid 3 at the next level and someone worth taking a chance on.
  • 2024 Aiden Austin - 5'7" Guard - Andrean - Small guards like Aiden need to be special to be considered by colleges and play at the next level. He had it goin in this one. Knocked down 3s which opened up driving lanes where he could finish at the rim in traffic. Sits down and defends his position well. Will be interesting to see what happens with him.
  • 2023 Isaiah Malone - 6'7" Forward - Prairie Heights - After going for 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks in front of St. Francis assistant coach Cummings he picked up an offer to play in the Crossroads League. The senior was good in this one and played under control. Smooth outside shot that makes defenders respect him around the arc. Length gives him the ability to alter/block shots. With his continued strength gain to go with his post game he could be a real nice player.
  • 2023 Chase Bachelor - 6'5" Guard - Prairie Heights - Tough guard who loves to score it, averaging 21 ppg. Does most of his damage at the basket and inside the arc. Good size helps him fight through defenders and get to the basket. Quick hands and gets in passing lanes to get steals. Like his game and think it translates to the next level. Could see D3s gettin involved here.
  • 2023 Hayden Dase - 6'7" Forward/Center - Kankakee Valley - Saw Haden and this squad a year ago against Portage and they struggled to really get anything going. This year Hayden and teammate Cam Webster stood out. Hayden was a presence in the post and on the defensive end. Good with both hands on the block and has nice touch. Good size and strength helps him get position. Sneaky athletic with length who rebounds well. Gets up and down the floor and can be a rim runner. Size also helps him protect the rim. Didn't look to or shoot outside the arc. Would be something he could potentially add to his game at the next level. But for now he'd be a solid center.
  • 2024 Cam Webster - 6'3" Guard - Kankakee Valley - Love big guards. Crafty lefty who is patient and picks his spots. Almost a little too unselfish for me, but great at getting his teammates involved. Ball doesn't stick at all with him. Great range from outside and stellar passer. Can play the 1 or 2, but probably a 2 at the next level. Will score from all three levels and is great from the line. Elevates nicely in his shot to help shoot over defenders. Will be playing in college in a couple years.
  • 2025 Michael Wellman - 6'5" Guard - Portage - Speaking of big guards, this is one who will be highly sought after. Jack of all trades and does them all well.  Defends, handles it, shoots it, controls the game, scores it, leads, and rebounds it. Does it all with consistency. Size and strength he uses to his advantage. Really like his game and what he brings to the table. Plays with swagger.
  • 2025 Garrett Clark - 6'3" Guard - Portage - Another guard with good size and one  who can shoot it. Quick to get to his spots and knock down big time shots. Also rebounds position well and gets the ball to open teammates to finish. Rebounds position and loves to run. Defends well. Another one of the Portage players to watch.
  • O'Mari Evans - 5'11" Guard - Portage - Wanted to add O'Mari here because he rattled off 7 straight points at one point in this one all by creating on his own. Finished with 9. Shifty guard who isn't relied upon right now but is capable of going off. A menace on D also. Keep an eye on him going forward.

Game Takes: Ben Davis 46, Carmel 45

0

Neither team could grab hold of this game.  Ben Davis' largest lead was six, and at a time when it seemed they were one more stop/score from starting to nail down the coffin,  Carmel immediately went on an 8-0 run.  Carmel's largest lead was four, and ultimately, they couldn't keep Ben Davis, mostly Zane Doughty, off the offensive glass to build much momentum.

  • There were two areas of concern for Carmel (really for any team playing Ben Davis), which are obvious in all games, but this is how Ben Davis really separates itself most games.  Live ball turnovers, including blocked shots, that lead to transition baskets, and offensive rebounds -- easy baskets and extra possessions.
    • Carmel, to my recollection only had two or three live ball turnovers, one of which was gathered 83' away from Ben Davis' basket, and there wasn't any conversion after Doughty's blocks.  Ben Davis was able to convert a miss at the rim by Sam Orme into an easy basket on the other end -- a huge four point swing -- but Ben Davis didn't get much in transition.
    • Keeping Doughty off the glass, despite how much they made him work, wasn't happening.  Doughty has an endless motor, and it was physical underneath.  Jared Bonds did his best to never let Doughty go unchecked, and Orme and Spender White both rebound their positions well.  Doughty turned great Carmel stops into second chances.
  • Doughty struggled with his back to the basket, and it's never been his strong suit.  He has gotten better, however, at facing and scoring, including a nice double move to score.  How much of that translates into the Missouri Valley vs. bigger defenders is a question, but that's part of the development most players go through moving up the ladder.
    • Keep in mind, the other aspects of his game translate very well -- defense, motor, rebounding
  • Carmel's defense took away almost all of Ben Davis' primary actions.  Many of which involve ball screens.  Ben Davis could rely on their half court motion (Flow) to work Carmel's defense and work for good shots.
    • One of the underrated things about Ben Davis.  They can possess the ball while still looking to score.  They aren't a team that over dribbles or has to hold it to run clock.
    • Early in the game, Mark Zachery found shots on the back side, and as did Clay Butler.  Butler closed the game out, hitting 5-6 FT.
  • Ben Davis did disrupt Carmel's offense, but without forcing live ball turnovers, Carmel was still able to get into their entries into Motion.
  • Orme scored 15 of his 23 in the second half, and he was the 8-0 run when Carmel was down by six.
  • All in all Carmel exploited the times Ben Davis would gamble a bit in passing gaps.  Alex Couto, especially, hit a couple of mid-range jumpers.  They didn't get as much out of their Motion, but they quickly move into secondary set calls as well as any team in the state.  (There are couple of things they do that also turn into a continuities with a lot backside opportunities.)
    • Could always use more curl cuts.  🙂

Inexplicably, Ben Davis broke a five game Carmel winning streak in this series, which by my count is part of a run in which Carmel had won 18 of the last 20.  Ben Davis remains undefeated with regular season games left.  Carmel is getting healthy, with only one of their instate losses bigger than one possession, a game which was two possessions until the final 90 seconds or so.

Game Takes: Fort Wayne Concordia 63 FW North 61

0

Concordia came out and took it to Northside right away tonight. Ajani Washington came out hot and had Concordia up 23-7 early in the 2nd quarter. Brauntae Johnson (Tae Tae) lead the charge for Northside and brought them all the way back to within 3 with 50+ seconds left in the 4th after an and 1. Johnson hit the free throw and said the magic word and got his 2nd technical of the night and was done for the game. Ended up being a really entertaining game and a showdown of two of Fort Wayne’s best players Washington and Johnson.

* Junior guard Ajani Washington was the man tonight for Concordia. Saw him earlier in the year vs Blackhawk Christian and he couldn’t get much going. Tonight hie had it going from all levels. Washington hit 4 3’s and a few pull up jumpers as well. Coming into tonight, Washington was averaging 13.9 ppg. He finished with 29 tonight.

*Senior Joe Tapp was big for Concordia as well tonight. Tapp has a knack for getting in the paint and pulling up from about 8 feet. All of his buckets tonight were exactly that. Tapp finished with 12.

* Junior Tae Tae Johnson was the lone bright spot for the Northside legends tonight. Johnson got off to a slower start but started getting downhill in the 2nd quarter. We’ve talked about it before, but Tae Tae getting downhill is a PROBLEM. Johnson had 11 at half and 25 in the 2nd half. Ended with 36 points. Johnson had a big time block off the glass on Ajani Washington in the 3rd quarter and picked up a technical. Johnson had a huge and 1 with 51 seconds left to pull the Legends within 3, but picked up his second technical and was done for the game. Johnson surpassed 1,000 points last night as well in his junior year.

Game Takes: Penn 88 Carroll 64

0

Never have I been impressed more with a team that lost by 24 points. Carroll’s future is BRIGHT. Saturday night they just ran into Markus Burton. The game was close through the first quarter and halfway through the second quarter. Halfway way through the second quarter Markus Burton just started taking the ball from Carroll. Penn is really hard to deal with when Burton has it going, but when you add in Joey Garwood and Joe smith knocking down corner 3’s, it can get out of hand in a hurry. Coming into the game I thought this was a trap game for Penn. They just came off an emotional, huge atmosphere game against rival Mishawaka Marian, but that didn’t seem to effect them in this one.

* Markus Burton was remarkable like he’s been all season. Carroll tried a box and one a few other things to try and slow him down but nothing seemed to work on Burton. Deep threes, pull ups, finishes at the rim over and through defenders- Burton had it going all night. He finished with 35 points.

* Joe Smith and Joey Garwood were huge for Penn as well. Burton draws a lot of attention so when he gets by his defender, Smith or Garwood’s defender has to step over which lead to a lot of corner 3’s for these two. Smith ended with 16 points and Garwood had 14.

* Sophomore Drelyn Truesdale was the man again for the Carroll Chargers. He was very limited this game with foul trouble trying to guard Burton, but he ended with 17 points. Truesdale is long and athletic and glides to the rim, but his jumper is smooth as well. Hit 2 threes tonight.

* Juniors Jaxon Pardon and Cannen Houser played well for Carroll. Pardon had 2 elite finishes around elite size and length from Penn’s bigs. Houser had some nice finishes as well and got above the rim to finish one as well. Both missed some shots they usually make but both still impacted the game. Pardon finished with 12 and Houser had 10.

POTW: Week of January 9-14

0

It was a big week for Ben Davis, and while it is a team effort, winning the Marion County Tournament, POTW tends to go to one player.  The impact Zane Doughty has doesn't always show up neatly on a stat column.  There is no 'glue to the defense' column.  Until FG% is broken down to the granular level like it is at the NBA level, we won't know what the opposition's FG% is at the basket when a player is involved in contesting it

However, we can see both of those traits in real time.  (It helps being there to watch it.)  Here is the week Doughty had:

    • vs Beech Grove 11 points 15 rebounds 3 blocks
    • vs Warren central 10 points 8 rebounds 3 blocks
    • vs Southport 22 points 16 rebounds 3 blocks
    • vs Lawrence North - 17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks

On top of that, Doughty broke Ben Davis' all-time rebounding record.  All of that makes Zane Doughty Courtside Indiana's Player of the Week for the week of January 9-14.
