Game Takes: SB Washington 71 – FW South 57

0

The Panthers led from start to finish in this one, although the Archers did keep things interesting for most of the game. They were just unable to get over the hump as senior heavy Washington wouldn't let that happen. Circle that Washington @ Penn game on February 10.

  • 6'2 Senior Marcus Northern had himself a game. Was in attack mode all four quarters. Scored in transition, getting to the rim, hitting a couple jumpers, and even knocking down a couple 3s. Really showed that he can play at the next level in my opinion. Works so hard on both ends and the motor is there. When he's able to get downhill it's over. Finished with 27 points and 5 rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Steven Reynolds is one who college coaches will be talking about regularly at some point this season. Shot looks really smooth and elevates well for it. Knocked down 3 early and was quiet on the offensive end for the rest of the game, while also being in foul trouble. Defends well and passes well. Puts himself in good position to rebound. Doesn't have to do too much right now as the Panthers are really senior heavy, but he'll have his moments and games this season for sure.
  • Seniors Eric Nocentelli, Jason Dockery, and Terrence Reid all did their thing in this one. Nocentelli bulldogs his way to the basket and can finish with his strength. Dockery does the same and can get to the line whenever he wants to. Reid had a handful of steals and is terror on the defensive end of the floor. All 3 should be looked at by D3 coaches.
  • FW South 6'3" senior Omarion Washington did all he could to keep the Archers in this one. Flashed some athleticism and shot making ability. I was impressed with his composure and leadership. Had 24 in this one. Rebounds position well and has good vision to find the open teammate as well. Worked hard for everything and was solid defensively.
  • Freshman Zac Belcher definitely looks the part. At 6'6" he's long and lanky but didn't get pushed around. Had 5 early blocks as well as 6 points before getting in foul trouble hunting more blocks and spending time on the bench. Definitely a player to keep an eye on. Hands and body will get stronger so the rebounding potential is there. Will be higher on lists going forward.

Game Takes: Homestead 56 Warsaw 39

0

Homestead doesn't have a Luke Goode or Fletcher Loyer this year, but the Spartans are going to have another year where they win a lot of games. Kyron Kaopuiki, Will Jamison, and Grant Leeper led the Spartans last night. Tucker Day will be another big factor for them once he is back from his foot injury. Throughout the first half, Homestead held a lead throughout but never got out of hand. Will Jamison propelled the Spartans in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead and never looked back. Luke Yeager was one of the few bright spots for Warsaw tonight. Yeager ended with 10 points and was active around the paint.

  • Junior Guard Will Jamison got to his spots tonight. He got into a number of midrange pull-ups that looked good. Jamison ended with 20 points tonight to lead the Spartans.
  • Seniors Kyron Kaopuiki and Grant Leeper also played well for the Spartans. Kaopuiki missed some shots he usually hits but was able to still have a strong game. Grant Leeper was a man in the paint tonight. Showed the ability to finish above the rim and score 1 on 1 in the post. Leeper ended with 12 points.
  • Luke Yeager ended with 10 points for Warsaw. Had some nice finishes in the paint, hit his free throws, and knocked down a 3. He showed the ability to knock down threes in their scrimmage against Kokomo where he hit 3 or 4 of them.
  • Jaxson Gould is dealing with a shoulder issue and you could tell it bothered him at times tonight. Gould's leadership and IQ on the court are some of the intangibles he provides and Warsaw needs him healthy this year if they are going to have success.

Game Takes: SB St. Joe 84 – SB Adams 80

0

In a game that saw Adams hold a lead for a majority of the first half, the Indians wouldn't be put away thanks to sophomore sensation Chase Konieczny who poured in 36 for St. Joe. Chase hit big shot after big shot. The Eagles couldn't get over the hump in the fourth despite senior Britt Vann's big night.

  • Chase Konieczny - Sophomore - St. Joe. Where else would we start after the sophomore scores 36 points and knocking down 6 threes on his way to leading the Indians to a victory. Just Tuesday, Concord held Chase to 15 points, making everything difficult for him. Three days later he wouldn't be held back. He is known for his shooting, but was able to score at all three levels. His length is a huge asset which helps him get shots off and also rebound his position well. If you're looking at a comparison to his brother, JR, then I'd say that Chase is further along that JR was as a sophomore. The major difference is that JR is more athletic and bouncier. Chase is sneaky quick with the ball and able to blow by defenders and finish at the rim. Also has a nice jumper he displayed. Definitely a top 10 prospect for the 2025 class.
  • 6'2" John Adams senior Brittain Vann showed why this is his team. Vann started off being hot early, scoring 10 of his team high 24 in the first quarter, and go things going for the Eagles. Britt is great on the ball as well as off of it, and leaves it all on the floor. Hit a couple big 3s and distributes well. Should be in store for a big senior season.
  • Other players to watch:
    • Amari Wesson - 6' Junior - Adams
    • Brashaun Woods - 6'4 Soph - St. Joe
    • Jayce Lee - 6'4 Junior - St. Joe

Game Takes: Cathedral 74, Brebeuf 45

0

Despite the score, there weren't big runs by Cathedral, but this game was pretty much over by the end of third quarter.

  • Cathedral's best lineups tonight had Kamari Slaughter in them.  The 6'4" senior guard didn't start, but when he entered he immediately impacted the game.  He was able to get downhill and finish, which up to that point, wasn't happening for Cathedral.
  • Jake Davis was his usual combination of long range sniper and rim protector. He took a charge (his usual) and contested shots at the rim vertically.  He hit three 3PTers in the first half, and in the second half drove a closeout to score.
    • Side note:  He's evidently two charges away from the state career record, a stat I didn't know was kept.
  • Brebeuf's junior class is as good as advertised, especially Evan Haywood.  He was excellent from the 3PT line, and as the game was still in doubt, it kind of felt if Reis Butcher and he could get going, they could climb back in it.
  • Butcher showed the ability to initiate offense.  He didn't show much of an outside shot tonight, but his length, athleticism and ball handling were on display tonight.
  • Merrick Macaluso was a terror on the offensive glass in the first half.  He was keeping Brebeuf within striking distance.  Cathedral cleaned it up in the second half...hence the score.

Hate to put out more on Brebeuf than Cathedral in a game like this, but I doubt even Coach Delaney was happy with how they played tonight.  We all know their weapons, and they didn't really get going until they went to their bench tonight.  It was also my first true look at Brebeuf's juniors.

Two things are clear tonight.  Cathedral holds up as the #1 team in 4A, and Brebeuf holds up as a clear contender in 3A.

Should Anyone Care (SAC): Power Rankings

0

Power rankings are meant to reflect what we (I guess in this case me) thinks a team will look like in March.  They aren't meant to be a reflection of who is on the longest winning streak.  It might look that way early on.

As the season goes on, our other writers will have input, but they didn't know I was publishing this on an ongoing basis.  We are going to.  These are updated through last week's games, and going forward we'll have other teams considered.  Some teams we just to learn more about, especially that unexpectedly lost players.

Full admission:  When we did our preview pods, in my mind I had Park Tudor in 3A.  They should've been in our top 10 in 2A.

One final note:  I'll work on the format of how these appear on your page going forward.  Right now it's just a straight copy and paste from a spreadsheet.

Game Takes: Blackhawk Christian (FW) 72 Fort Wayne North 61

0

A special night at Blackhawk Christian. Before the game, Blackhawk Christian honored Coach Mark Davidson and his family with a ceremony celebrating his legacy and what he meant to the Blackhawk Christian community.

The first half was back and forth with Blackhawk holding a slim lead throughout. Blackhawks Gage Sefton battled foul trouble in the 1st half with 2 early fouls. Sophomore Kellen Pickett was really impressive and lead the Braves in the 1st half with Sefton on the bench. Too many miscues hurt Fort Wayne North in the 2nd half and Blackhawk was able to capitalize and extend the lead.

  • 6'8 Blackhawk Sophomore Kellen Pickett opened a lot of eyes last night. Pickett finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. I love his motor and he has good hands and feet at 6'8. Showed great touch around the basketball and knocked down 2 3's as well. D1 coaches need to get eyes on him if they haven't already.
  • Gage Sefton, Josh Furst, and Jimmy Davidson are their returning starters from last year and clearly their leaders. Sefton ended with 10 points and you can tell he has gotten stronger and more explosive. Josh Furst ended with 9 points with most of those coming from the free-throw line. Jimmy Davidson does all the little things for Blackhawk. He rebounds it really well for a guard and has great vision. He is really good from 12 feet and in.
  • Our biggest concern with Blackhawk coming into the year was outside shooting. Last night 6'4 junior starter Isaac Smith showed that he will be that guy for them this year. Smith was their 2nd leading scorer with 15 points and showed the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter.
  • Fort Wayne North was led by 6'4 junior Brauntae Johnson. He ended with 21 points 7 assists and 6 steals. When he is attacking the rim he is really hard to stop. Tae Tae is really explosive and finishes well around the rim with either hand. Jaxson Fugate was a bright spot for Fort Wayne North as well. He ended with 9 points all from 3, but Northside needs guys who can stretch the floor and the 6'5 junior wing can certainly do that.

Game Takes: Park Tudor 70, Guerin Catholic 66

0

Guerin Catholic led most of the way, and outside of a stretch in the first half when Park Tudor hit a three 3PTers in four possessions, it looked like Guerin would keep control of the game.  The second half completely flipped, as Park Tudor went on a 3PT barrage.

  • Dylan Murans from the start asserted himself for Guerin Catholic.  The 6'7" junior forward transferred in from Carmel and was impressive to start the game - two 3PTers and a transition dunk - before getting in early foul trouble.
    • His energy level was the same when he returned in the second half, but Park Tudor did a much better job of finding him early.
  • Jermaine Coleman was more of a presence in the second half than the first, and while he shot well from the 3PT line, much of it was due to being more active off the ball, finding opportunities to make plays inside the arc.  He drifted in the first half, but it was clear an adjustment was made at halftime.
  • Park Tudor got contributions beyond the arc from Thomas Ruffin and Hudson Horvath.  Horvath is a 6'0" sophomore and will push to be part of the starting rotation by the mid-season.
  • Kamea Chandler and Robert Sorensen make up a potent backcourt.  Chandler is crafty and quick with the ball, and there were a couple of possessions the ball stuck with him, he was able wind his way to a number of clean looks at the rim.
    • Sorensen drew the most attention from the PT defense, but he started to get going in the second half.  He's an excellent shooter with deep range, who can get his own shot.
  • Ultimately, Park Tudor took advantage of the top of Guerin's defense.  Coleman, Ruffin and Horvath each found openings, either through good action or just being able to shoot over the top of Guerin's zone.  Guerin had stints of miscommunication up top.

Game Takes: Carroll (Fort Wayne) 59 Norwell 58

0

Norwell had the lead most of the game until late in the fourth. A big fourth quarter by Jaxon Pardon for Carroll and a late tip-in from Jaiyre Sampson helped propel Carroll to a victory. Carroll only won 2 games last year and is already on the board with a win over a really good Norwell team. Norwell is a top 10 team in 3A and will have a lot of success this year. Carroll has a tough schedule but they certainly look like they could be one of the most improved teams in the state.

  • Carroll's junior guard Jaxon Pardon really came alive in the 4th quarter in this one. Pardon hit 3 3's and a layup for 11 points in the 4th. Pardon ended with 21 points. He showed the ability to hit contested threes, get by his man on closeouts, and finish at the rim from tough angles.
  • Junior Cannen Houser for Carroll had a solid game in this one as well. Big time shooter but shows the ability to get by his defender and pull up or finish at the rim.
  • Senior Luke McBribe for Norwell was the best player on the floor tonight. Really tough player. True three-level scorer at the high school level. Love his shooting ability and he is able to finish in the paint with BOTH hands.
  • Norwell is really balanced and will get production from multiple players throughout the year besides McBride. This particular game it was Lleyton Bailey. Bailey had 16 points and was able to knock down some shots from the perimeter.

Game Reports: Bloomington North 57 Bedford North Lawrence 55

0

Bedford North Lawrence hit Bloomington North in the mouth right away and jumped out to a 9-0 lead. BNL had a slim lead most of the game until the very last second. JQ Roberts hit a 14-foot jumper as time expired to win the game. BNL was up 1 with under 30 seconds to go, going to the line for a 1 and 1 and missed. BNL got another stop and went to the line for a 1 and 1 and missed again. Plenty of chances for BNL to put the game away but couldn't make their free throws.

  • Senior point guard Colten Staggs for BNL ran the show for them all night. Great quickness and handle. Showed the ability to hit threes and get by his defender and hit some pull-up jumpers. Also, scored it around the rim.
  • Senior guard Colten Leach for BNL was impressive as well. Seemed like he was consistently getting by his defender and hitting jumpers and finishing at the rim.
  • JQ Roberts started off the game slow going 0-3 from three, but certainly got it going after that. JQ ended with 31 points and 12 rebounds. He did hit some 3's in this one but much more effective getting to the rim. He is hard to stop if he gets a straight path to the rim. Want to see him get better at being productive when he is initially stopped on a straight-line drive.
  • JQ had over half of Bloomington North's points so going to need more production from the others. I did like PG Davan Daniels ability to defend and get to his spots on offense. Their 2 wings, Gavin Reed and Luke Lindeman, showed the ability to hit shots from the perimeter and will be key for Bloomington North's success moving forward.
