Game Takes: Munster 75 – Bishop Noll 49

0

In a game that Munster led start to finish, the Mustangs showed their depth, as well as their ability to maintain a lead with their veteran leaders on the bench in foul trouble. 2024 guard Nolan Kinsella really stepped it up. Munster will be a contender yet again.

  • Although Munster senior and Northern Michigan commit Brandon Trilli didn't score until the second half, he made the most of his time. Saddled with 2 early fouls and forced to the bench, he came out of the halftime break and asserted himself right away to help put this game out of reach. Brandon has such quick feet and can get to the basket easily. Will have a solid senior season and be a great leader for the Mustangs.
  • Every time I see 2024 guard David Cundiff I am impressed. Is always in full control of the game and his team. Runs the point very well and should be on coaches radars going forward, if he isn't already. Good size and is strong which helps him finish through contact. Is also a capable shooter. Knack for finding the open teammate. Just the type of heady player you like running your squad.
  • A surprise in this one was 6'2" Nolan Kinsella (2024) for Munster. When Cundiff and Trilli went out with foul trouble, he stepped it up. Would like to see him again, but definitely someone who coaches should take notice of. Long frame and can score at all three levels. Has time to get stronger which will help his game even more. Rebounds position well also. Keep an eye on him if you're an NAIA coach.
  • Coming into this one a player that we really wanted to get our eyes on was Noll 2024 guard move-in Jaedin Reyna. At 6' he was a well known recruit coming in from Illinois. In this one he struggled to get things going. I'd credit that to first game jitters. He is a solid passer and handles it well, and also knocked down a couple 3s. When I see him again I want to see if he's taking on more of a leader roll and elevated his defending. He showed some flashes for sure. Give him a couple games to settle in.

Game Takes: LaPorte 60 – Riley 51

0

Riley led early in a turnover filled contest. But in the end the upperclassmen of LaPorte proved to be too much for the Wildcats.

  • LaPorte 2024 forward Rylan Kieszkowski is really someone coaches need to keep an eye on. Good size and length. Can guard multiple positions and shoots it well. A little bit of a post game could be just what he needs to see the D1 level. Great prospect going forward.
  • The hot name to know coming into this one was 5'8" Riley 2025 guard Marvin Schindler. He just couldn't get anything going in this contest. Seems to be a little better off the ball to me, but his size is tricky for a 2 guard. Hit a couple 3s and got to the basket a couple times, but otherwise was shutdown. Still a kid who needs to be seen, so we'll chalk this one up to early season growing pains.
  • Two other names that showed some flashes for Riley were a pair of 2024s in 6'5" forward Payton Baird, and 6'1" guard Manny Hill. Baird had a nice 2 dribble baseline dunk late in the 3rd. And Hill knocked down a couple of 3s in a row at one point. By this time the Wildcats were scrambling to get back into the game.
  • The Slicers showed me that they can definitely compete for a Sectional 3 title. Improved from last years 11-12 squad, LaPorte is led by 2023 guard Kyle Kirkham who took things over last night. Gets to the basket well and is strong enough to finish through contact. Also a capable shooter. Although they lack depth, look for them to make some noise come March.

Game Takes: Carmel 42, Zionsville 35

0

A defensive struggle in the first half gave way to a faster pace in the second, and Carmel took full advantage.

  • Sam Orme got going early, and despite battling mild foul trouble, he didn't shy away from those moments when Carmel needed a big basket.  He shot well from 3PT, scored in the post and handled the ball in transition.
  • Zionsville's big two, Logan Imes and Nick Richart, had a combined two points in the first half.  Both responded with better second halves, but Imes didn't get on the board until midway through the 3rd.
    • Carmel's Jake Griffin put on a master class defensively guarding Imes, and Imes did most of his damage late after Carmel pushed the lead to 15.
    • Imes getting downhill more opened up opportunities for Richart, who really struggled to finish around and over Carmel defenders.
  • As the second half sped up, Carmel showed they had more weapons.  Spencer White added 10 points, while Jared Bonds and Griffin both took advantage of the extra space.
  • Once in control, Carmel's spacing and movement carved up Zionsville.  However, FT shooting was a bit of a problem.  A couple of empty possessions at the line provided a bit of a window for Zionsville, but there wasn't any let up on the defensive end of the floor.
  • Both teams have promising sophomore shooters.  Sam Couto for Carmel, Maguire Mitchell for Zionsville.  Each hit shots early but found baskets harder to come by as the game wore on.  Still...kids to look at.
