Game Takes: Barr-Reeve 41 Bloomington South 36

0

Bloomington South held a 4-2 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.  Yes, you read that right.  Both teams struggled to get opportunities to fall.  Barr-Reeve scored 13 points in the second quarter to go into half time with a 15-8 lead.  In the third quarter both teams found ways to get points on the board and Bloomington South was making it a game with the score 33-27 after 3.  South went on a furious run in the 4th to bring it to as close as 4 but couldn't buy a bucket for the last couple of minutes.

  • While South lacks good size they are crazy athletic and play hard all game long.  Their on the ball defense will give some team fits.
  • Maddix Blackwell of Bloomington South was the catalyst the Panthers needed to get the offense going.  He was getting to the rim with ease and scoring.  He was great on defense and didn't allow easy passes in to the post.
  • Curt Hopf of Barr-Reeve has worked hard to improve his out side shot.  He knocked down a triple and it was with out hesitation.
  • Hagen Knepp of Barr-Reeve was good around the rim.  He recognized mismatches and demanded the ball.  His mid range shot was a little off but his game continues to improve.
  • Joey Bomba of Bloomington South has a good looking stroke from the perimeter.  He will be the main scoring option for the panthers this season.  South done a nice job of getting him clean looks.

Game Takes: Carmel 64, Noblesville 36

0

A 13-3 second quarter saw Carmel stretch a three point 1st quarter lead to a 26-13 spread at halftime.  Their lead only grew from there.

  • Brian Waddell was outstanding for Carmel tonight.  The skilled 6'7" wing is a willing defender and rebounds his position.  While being a consistent 3pt shooter, his best asset is his movement without the basketball.
  • Carmel's ball movement is its own offensive weapon, and tonight Peter Suder and Conner Goia both had 5 assists.
    • Suder was more aggressive with the ball tonight, and the progression of his jump shot continues.
  • Carmel at their "worst" defensively, rarely has a rotation with a player who isn't a willing defender, and they have four defenders who are +defenders with a couple of lockdown defenders.  Suder and Josh Whack are lockdown caliber defenders, while Goia is a +defender from the PG spot.  Off the bench is Ben Frische, 6'4" senior forward, as well as Britt Beery, another 6'4" senior forward.
  • Carmel's Charlie Williams struggled with foul trouble this evening.  The 6'9" junior center has yet to get on track this season.  He'll have his own gravity in games when he's going well.
  • Noblesville plays two sophomores and a freshman consistent minutes - Preston Roberts, 6'4" sophomore guard; Luke Almadovar, 6'2" sophomore guard; Aaron Fine, 6'1" freashman guard.  They also have Samson Dickens, 6'2" freshman guard.

POTW: Week of November 30-December 5

0

OK...as subjective as this process is, sometimes it's not fair when you have *the* game in front one of the guys making the decision.  And yes, sometimes the opponent matters.  However, Ian Scott from Plainfield put on a show vs. North Central in front of COVID restricted crowd that likely housed more people in the media than actual fans.

Friday night Scott had his "worst" performance of the season, 17 points and 8 rebounds in a win over Whiteland.  The 6'7" senior center is averaging 26.5 points and nearly 13 rebounds per game.

In Plainfield's 66-56 win over North Central, Scott totaled a mere 43 points, 15 rebounds and 2 steals.  23 of his 43 came in the first half, but his second was even more impressive. As he nearly doubled down on his point total, he took the brunt of halftime adjustments, more double teams and having to catch and score in space vs. NC's pressure, rather than in the confines of paint.

Scott responded, including three transition dunks and one 18' jump shot.  Most figured he would be a problem for NC, but not sure anyone expected that.  As a result, Ian Scott is the Metro Indy Basketball Player of the Week for week of November 30-December 5

Others Getting Considered

In 2 wins, Cole Wireman scored 64 points (29 and 35), grabbed 7 rebounds, handed out 7 assists, and had 10 steals. The 6'0" senior guard shot a combined 30 of 42 from the field, and 4 of 7 from the free throw line. Cole moved into 3rd place on our schools all time scoring list with a combined total of 1457 points. He is averaging 36.3 points per game this year through 4 games.

While the household name for Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian is Caleb Furst, they have other weapons around him.  Zane Burke is one of those.  The 6'3" senior guard had a big week in wins over Fort Wayne North, New Haven and Hamilton (OH), averaging 21 points, 10.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.

A strong week for a youngster!  Jack Benter put up 25 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in a win over Salem, and he followed it up with a 29 point, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in a win over Seymour.  The 6'2" freshman hit 9 3pters in those two games as well.  That's an impressive week for Coach Benter's freshman son.  Their group of underclassmen will make noise before it's done...see below.

Cambridge City's Tyler Wyles put up impressive numbers vs. Muncie Burris.  37 points, including 6 3pters.  The 6'1" sophomore  guard also put up 3 rebounds and 3 steals on the night.

Game Takes: Gary West 63 – Michigan City 61

0

Jalen Washington didn't play in West Sides first game of the season vs Hammond Gavit, so his status for this one was up in the air for me. After seeing him go through warm-ups he seemed ready to go, and he was. He started and played limited minutes, nut his presence was felt. This game saw a lot of zone from Michigan City, which slowed down the game and is something they are not accustomed to. West Side did not see a lead until there was 3:23 left in the 3rd quarter when they were finally able to get over the hump. In the end, the defense and rebounding of West Side prevailed.

  • Playing limited minutes, 2022 Jalen Washington looked a little rusty but moved well. Was kind of slow on defense, but that's expected after not playing a game for such an extended period of time. Rebounded well. All in all things look to be coming along nicely for him. No reason to rush him.
  • 2023 City guard Jamie Hodges Jr. is a kid we've featured and talked about a lot before. He finished with 30 in this one and hit some big time shots. Proved he belonged in this game as he rose to the occasion. Had a chance to win it at the end but came up just short. I bet he's in a gym right now gettin shots up. Dude is a warrior.
  • Senior Quimari Peterson led the way for West Side with 22 points, with 16 in the second half and knocked down five 3s. Definitely came alive in the second half and looked really good. Solid floor general who rebounds his position well.
  • 2022 Chrishawn Christmas had a quiet first half, as did most of the Cougars, but came alive in the second half. Showed his athleticism with a nice tip dunk, and big time block in the closing seconds to help seal the win. Finished with 11 and 8. Seems to be rounded into form and should have a good season.
  • The unsung hero of this one to me was senior Parion Roberson. The 6'4" forward took 3 charges and had some big time rebounds. He was very active on D and on the glass. Finished with 8 and 7. Love his game and would do really well for an NAIA school.

Game Takes: Santa 4 Shoes Classic – Brownsburg

0

DISCLOSURE:  Only saw games 1,2 and 4 in full

Brownsburg vs. Gary 21st Century

  • Pierce Thomas didn't play for Brownsburg.  He did not have enough practices following a COVID quarantine to play.  Brownsburg's success will rely deeper than his presence in the lineup.  While they certainly are better with him, ultimately, this wasn't a great test for them.  They will need to establish a consistent outside threat to achieve their goals in March.  Thomas' shot has developed to where is part of that mix.
    • As troublesome as this aspect is for them, 6'4" senior wing, Tyray Lackey, who is super athletic, has a improved his range and mechanics.  If it holds, he'll be a welcome threat.
  • Luke Lacey...still the best passer and best perimeter defender in the state.
  • DJ Moss is a talented sophomore wing for 21st Century, but he will have to take the defensive end seriously.  At the very least be a willing defender.

Plainfield vs. North Central

  • Ian Scott, 6'7" senior center, was brilliant!  Tallying 43 points, North Central certainly wasn't prepared for him, and while they did make an adjustment in how they guarded him in the second, it didn't take long for Plainfield to adjust.
  • Plainfield will be a sleeper team to watch come tournament time.  They have positional size 2-5, North Central's quickness and subsequent pressure didn't overwhelm them.  The game tightened up in the second half and was a one possession game early in the 4th.  However, NC couldn't create easy baskets with their pressure.
  • Leland Walker was better as the game wore on, but he did struggle vs Plainfield's length/size.  Plainfield mixed man and zone defenses, and everywhere Walker attacked, he was met with multiple defenders.  His best moments, outside of transition, were utilizing ball screens, where he was able to get into driving gaps.
    • His penetration just off catches weren't overly successful vs. Plainfield

Crispus Attucks vs. Warren Central

  • Though Attucks won, the most impressive performance was by WC's Malik Stanley.  He was his normal steady self, which includes being able to score from all three levels and run a team.
    • A low D1 school needs to step up on him.  Indianapolis needs to step up on him!
    • Stanley is an extremely efficient point guard, who at the very worst makes great decisions on the floor, guards his position and is an excellent shooter.
  • Attucks' Isaiah Stafford ends up with pretty good counting stats, and he has a great motor.  There are times when he needs to make the next read.  Attucks has two extremely talented forwards in Jaylen Carson and Jalen Hooks.  They needed more touches.
  • Speaking of Hooks, the progression of his shot mechanics is moving him towards being a consistent 3pt threat.  He was getting most of his catches today in the corners or off handoffs but wasn't attacking on those.  He scored most of his points in the second quarter, though, at a time when he was the only getting shots to fall.
    • He was missed a few times in the first half in transition.
  • D'Ante Davis was aggressive with the ball, but he struggled to convert from the FT line.  He and Daniel Coates, the 6'6" transfer from Chicago Thornton both were excellent on the glass.  Davis made some impressive defensive plays, including a couple in transition.
    • Warren is still without Gabe McNary.  The 6'8" senior center has not received eligibility from the IHSAA following his transfer from Avon.

Game Takes: Riley 60 – Marian 49

0

The Wildcats came out dialed in from the tip. With new coach Alex Daniel this team has a totally different feel from last years Riley squad. They played hard and as a team. Focused on their game plan, they executed it nicely. Fired on all cylinders early and often. Yes, Blake Wesley finished with 38, but it was a true team win. Played tough team defense. Marian's young core battled and got them back in the game, but in the end they were in just too deep of a hole.

  • If you don't know, now you know. Blake Wesley is the real deal. He's a dog on D. So good in transition. So good in the half court. Prolific scorer. Super athletic. You name it and he can do it. Filled it up tonight. Had 38 and 6.
  • Phillip Robles, the 5'9" senior guard for the Wildcats, can just sit down on D. Such a hard working player. Has a nice skill set that could land him on a roster at the next level. Has a nice little shot, and was able to finish a couple times in with the bigs.
  • 5'10" sophomore Deaglan Sullivan picked up where he left off as a freshman. Have always loved his game. Deaglan has gotten stronger. He has no problem getting to the basket. Finishes well in transition. Can knock down the 3. Has great court vision and handles.
  • Richard Brooks is such a smooth shooter. The 6'2" junior for Marian can shoot the heck out of the ball. He is going to be a dangerous player this season and going forward. Riley (Blake Wesley) was just able to lock him up in this one.
  • If this Marian team gets it together they have the chance to be in a similar position they were last year and can be successful. They really miss Jerry Bracey, a great leader who graduated. If sophomore Dar'e'on Thornton, who is really bouncy and has a knack for rebounding, and junior Kaleo Kakalia can put together some good games, then this team will be in a good spot.

Game Takes: Cathedral 70, Brebeuf 58

0

Cathedral has now won this game 20 straight times, and staring off on a 21-2 run pretty much propelled them to the win.  The Irish stretched the lead to as high as 23. However, Brebeuf cut it to 10 by the end of the 3rd quarter.  Cathedral scored the first three possessions of the 4th quarter, and that ended much of the suspense.

  • Tayshawn Comer's maturation as a floor general showed out tonight for Cathedral.  His understanding of pace is the major cause of that, able to use his body to ward off defenders as he changes speeds.
  • First good look at Jaxson Edwards.  The 6'5" junior wing was outstanding on both ends of the floor (more on him in a later posting--Tuesday likely).  He, along with Vince Brady, 6'4" senior wing (Air Force commit) are as good of a pair of two-way wings as there is in the state.  Both are excellent defenders.
  • Once Brebeuf started to get traction, it was Evan Altman keeping the game from totally getting away.  He was a force around the paint and finishing plays in transition.
  • Billy Smith got going more in the second half, and that's what helped Brebeuf start to cut into the lead.  His shot really quickens up during game action, vs. watching him in pre-game, and it was fluid off the catch and off the dribble.
  • Turnovers and missed opportunities around the basket is what doomed Brebeuf to start the game.  That's a big credit to Cathedral's pressure.  They sped up Brebeuf, and to compound it, they took four charges in the first half.  Jake Davis, 6'6" sophomore, took three or four on his own through the game.

Game Takes: Michigan City 111 – Marquette Catholic 65

0

The Recap: This is a game I wanted to get to when I first saw schedules coming out. Michigan City had basically everyone coming back from a very solid team last season, led by one of the most underrated and electrifying players in the 2023 class in Jamie Hodges Jr. I'll get to more of this Michigan City squad below. Another reason I wanted to get to this game was to see how 2022 guard Brit Harris stacked up against some tough competition. I will also touch on this result below, but overall, this game ended up getting out of hand unfortunately, and being a little lopsided.

Six Takes:

  • This Michigan City team has the same feel as last year when I saw them a couple times, but there seems to be something a little different. More grit. More heart. They more than make up for their lack of size with the way they all battle and fight. Have depth. Very scrappy and they are relentless on D. Forced 20 turnovers. I'm on board with MC.
  • Jamie Hodges Jr. is one of the top point guards in the 2023 class. Loves getting downhill, isn't afraid to attack the basket, can finish through contact, will rebound, can pass, and locks down on D. Truly a swiss army knife. All 5'9" of him. Finished with a solid 20 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals.
  • To compliment Hodges Jr. you can add senior leader, guard/forward 6'4" Evan Bush. Showed his range in this one, along with his inside game. Worked really hard, and I could tell he's improved since last time I saw the Wolves. He's a player I could see as a 3 at the next level. I had him for 19 points 3 3's, and 7 rebounds.
  • Another senior who has really stepped up is 6' senior guard Tahari Watson. He was strokin it, and was really good in transition. Very solid defender as well. Got to the basket as well. Would be a good 2 at the next level. Tahari had 21 points with 5 3's.
  • I first heard of 6'2" 2022 guard Brit Harris last year during the season, but never was able to see him play. That all changed at the end of this summer at Indiana Game Championship Sunday where he really impressed. He impressed me again in this one and showed he could hang with some tougher competition. He ended up with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. He handled the ball decently in this one, and played with a little swag. Really interested in his development going forward. Length and athleticism are there. Right now, probably projects as a 2 or 3 at the next level.
  • 6' sophomore Gary Lewis ended the night with 22 points and hit 4 3's. Really liked his game as he showed the ability to shoot it, and also finish at the rim. Junior Kaden Manna stands at strong 6'4". This was a tough one for him but still showed some flashes of being a solid player. Rebounded and defended well. Scored some around the bucket. Both are guys to keep an eye on.

POTW: Week of November 23-November 28

0

Brooks Barnhizer messed around and got a triple double.  The 6'7" senior guard, who is committed to Northwestern, toyed with Metropolitan, as one observer put it.  Barnhizer produced 40 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 8 steals.  The production makes Brooks Barnhizer the Metro Indy Basketball Player of the Week for week of November 23-November 28.

Others Getting Consideration

Opening the year 3-0 is never a bad thing.  Loogootee senior, Silas Bauer,  was impressive in each of those wins.  The 6'5" forward, who is still uncommitted, poured in efforts of 19 points and 10 rebounds vs. Rock Creek, 16 points and 12 rebounds vs. Crawford County and 31 points and 10 rebounds vs. Evansville Day.

Pike juniors JJ Louden and Ryan Conwell are both off to strong starts.  Both scoring 18 points in their win over Hamilton Southeastern, Louden, 6'4" guard, produced it on 7-9 FG, 2-2 3pt, 4 assists and 4 steals.  Conwell, 6'2" guard, was 6-9 FG, 4-6 3pt, including a nice second quarter barrage, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.  Both are involved as primary ball handlers.

Kaden Stanton had an impressive opening week for New Albany, averaging 20 points and 8.5 assists per game, vs. Bloomington South and Clarksville, he did all of that with just one total turnover.

Last year Gus Etchison started the season as POTW, with a 50+ point game.  He tailed off just a bit...a teeny, tiny bit.  "Only" producing 39 points (5-9 3pt) with 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks, the video of one is surfing around social media.
