Nick Baumgart joins Jim Reamer to discuss the state tournament draw in real time.  (We had a live feed setup, but we had to shut that down.  Lesson learned...we'll adjust.)  We also discuss the post game fight between Michigan and Wisconsin.

POTW: Week of February 7-12

0

Sorry for the two week hiatus.  I had a death in my family, putting me as the executor.  Thankfully, still be able to get each day done in time to get to games.

Triple doubles are rare.  Triple doubles for sophomores are even rarer.  Triple doubles in a category other than points, rebounds and assists rarer still.  Putting up 32 points, 20 rebounds and 11 blocks, Flory Bidunga, 6'10" sophomore center for Kokomo did just that.  All of that in Kokomo's win over Richmond, earning Flory Bidunga Courtside Indiana's Player of the Week for the week of February 7-12.

Game Takes: Oak Hill 78, Tipton 63

0

An uptempo game from the start, a tight game early, a Tipton run had them up 21-11, but Oak Hill cut it to two before the end of the first.  The Eagles took a five point lead into halftime, a tough final minute of the half for Tipton.

The second half was all Oak Hill.

  • The big names delivered for each team.
    • Landon Biegel finished with 32 points for Oak Hill, showed off his range, drove close outs and was a presence on the offensive glass, all while dishing out 4 or 5 assists.
    • Tipton sophomore Nolan Swan was more productive in the first half than the second, but the 6'0" point guard finished with 24 points.  Excellent shot mechanics and a pretty quick release, he shot it well off the pass and was able to get into shots off the dribble.  Excellent passer!
  • As much attention as Biegel soaks up for Oak Hill, Caleb Krull got off to a hot start keeping Oak Hill in the game.  Krull moved well without the ball, getting open in the paint.
  • Ty Fagan, 6'7" sophomore center, pulled his first start of the season for Oak Hill.  He scored their first six points, was active on the glass and came away with a couple of loose balls.
  • While I'm sure he'll feel he could've played better, Tipton's Grady Carpenter put on a passing show, especially in transition.  The 6'4" freshman serves as Tipton's point guard, and his eyes are always scanning the floor.  Attacking diagonally in transition, hitting a rim run or two.  He was equally effective in the half court.
    • He was able to get free for a couple of 3's, and his shot mechanics looked good.  The kid has a chance.

Top Targets of the Last Week

0

Tuesday 2/8 - Jimtown @ Bremen

  • Carson Miller - 6'3" 2022 Guard/Forward - Bremen
    • This was a tough night at the office for Carson, but he didn't quit and saved his best for the end. Finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds and closed the game out for the Lions. He's the kind of kid who will work hard outside of practice, just as much as he does during practice. Unselfish player who likes getting his teammates involved. Good build already so easy to get him a little stronger. D3 with a potential NAIA ceiling.

Friday 2/11 - West Noble @ Columbia City

  • Austin Cripe - 6'4" 2023 Combo Guard - West Noble
    • Austin is a pure scorer, who can also rebound well and distribute. Loves getting downhill and to the rim where he can finish. Great body with some length who will only get stronger. Capable shooter and defender. Would love to see him have more dog in him where he just takes a game over because I feel like the ability is there. He's an NAIA/D2 kid with his size and position versatility.
  • Andrew Hedrick - 6'1" 2023 Guard - Columbia City
    • Andrew is a scrappy lead guard who is always under control. Can guard multiple positions with his toughness and versatility. Great at getting to the rack and finishing. Tremendous FT shooter as well. Outside shot is there and he doesn't force it. Very heady player. Gets inside and rebounds well. Good in the open floor and also in the half court. Controls his team with purpose and understanding. Is a D3 coaches dream but I can see him playing at the NAIA level for sure.
  • Mason Baker - 6'2" 2022 Guard - Columbia City
    • Mason is such a solid and consistent player. Guards multiple positions. Shoots it well. Active on the glass and is a good passer. Never stops moving on offense and finds his spots. Doesn't force shots. Great at getting out and transition. Definite leader and like how he plays. He's looking at the D3 level right now and I feel like he fits really well there.

Saturday 2/12 - Hammond Central @ Chesterton

  • Jordan Woods - 6'3" 2023 Guard - Hammond Central
    • It was a tough night for the Wolves, but Jordan was consistent for them. He does just about everything well. Can shoot it from outside, run the point, rebound, and distribute the ball, and get to the paint. His size really helps him do what he wants as he can shoot over defenders. Ball handling helps him get around the defense with a really good hesitation move. Good length on the defensive end as well. Can see why coaches and scouts like his upside. I think he's a D2-D1 type of player when all said and done.
  • Kenneth Grant - 6' 2023 Guard - Hammond Central
    • Grant started off the game HOT! He is a shooter who can get on a burner and knock down 5-6 3s in a row. When those weren't falling he would try to attack the basket. Was a little loose but capable off the dribble. Rebounds it well for his size. Hard nosed defender as well. His shooting ability would be nice at the NAIA level.
  • Travis Grayson - 5'10" 2022 Guard - Chesterton
    • If you don't know the name now and you're an NAIA coach then you better get familiar real soon. Bulldog. Turned it up last night and controlled the game. Got to the basket when he wanted and finished. Steady and trustworthy with the ball. Doesn't make mistakes. Floor leader. As mentioned before he has gotten a lot better from outside. Someone you'd love on your team and not have to worry about going up against. Have spoken highly of him since his sophomore season and he's done nothing but get better. It's time for more NAIA offers.
  • Tyler Parrish - 6'2" 2023 Guard - Chesterton
    • Tremendous upside here for Tyler. Love how he plays and his size. So smooth and under control with the ball. Can be a secondary ball handler if needed. Hits outside shots with consistency. Plays hard and can defend. Know what you're gonna get out of him on a nightly basis. For now I see him at the NAIA level.
  • Justin Sims - 6'6" 2023 Forward - Chesterton
    • This was the best game I've seen Justin play offensively that wasn't an AAU game. He did everything right and let the game come to him. Showed patience around the basket and finished through contact. Went 8/9 from the line. With his length he is always going to be a rim protector, whether that means he's blocking shots or just altering them. Can also get into passing lanes and make deflections. As he continues to get stronger it will only make him a better inside player. Has the ability to stretch the floor, now, as he can shoot it a bit. Be interesting to see what the postseason and summer holds for him. NAIA/D2

Featured Games for Monday, February 7

7:30 PM Lawrence North (10-4) vs. Carmel (13-4)

Carmel has one five of the last six, 10 of the last 12 meetings, including 2-0 last season meeting in the state finals. Regardless, these games are rarely not close contests, and they rarely disappoint in the talent department. Both teams enter with likely Indiana all-stars, CJ Gunn (Lawrence North) and Peter Suder (Carmel). Both will likely get Mr. Basketball votes, and Gunn will likely finish toward the top.

When Carmel's juniors are cooking, they're extremely difficult to beat. That's happening more and more, but it's still not an every game thing. LN looking for a consisten second option gets it occasionally from Mac Brown, Kobe Bowles and Azavier Robinson.
Lawrence North Wildcats

    Game Takes: #2 Northwood 52 – Concord 50 OT

    0

In what ended up a 2 point victory for the Panthers, Cade Brenner hit the game winning layup as time expired. Concord battled all night, even taking the lead on a couple of occasions in the second half. Their efforts came up just short, and they missed the presence of senior G/F Amarion Moore. The Panther role players stepped up for Northwood in this one as well.

    Cade Brenner - 6'2" Guard - 2023

    • Cade did what he's done all season, and that's have a big game. Statistically he finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. But he was more than that. He is just a presence on the floor who demands the attention of any defender who is close to him. Willing to put the ball on the deck and attack, or do what he's really known for and that's shoot it. Unlimited range. He knocked down 4 of his 3 point attempts. Cade also put himself in good spaces to get rebounds. Stepped it up on D in this one as well. High ceiling.

    Ian Raasch - 6'5" Forward - 2023

    • Love Ian's game and how he plays as he is typically not talked about enough when it comes to this Northwood team. Great size, and length. Fluid around the basket. Came up big in OT as he had a bucket and 2 FTs and finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds. Does a lot of things right and is someone who will play at the next level. Really like him going forward as a guy for college coaches to keep an eye on, especially at the NAIA level.

    Malachi Emmons - 6'1" Guard - 2022

    • D3s looking for a solid guard who can create his own shot and get to the basket need to look no further than Emmons. He's just solid. Finished with 11 points he was able to get to the paint and finish, or hit from the midrange. Finds himself on the glass enough to grab a few rebounds each game as well. Would be a nice addition to most D3s.
