Game Takes: Evansville North vs Hammond

0

Both teams came out applying various forms of full court pressure.  This sped up the game and resulted in multiple turnovers for each team.  Once the teams settled down it turned into a pretty good game.  Neither team shot well from behind the arc but traded 3s at various times throughout the game.  Ev. North 6"5" Senior Tristen Fisher was good all game in the paint for the Huskies.  Hammond 6'4" Junior Harold Woods was all over the court for the Wildcats and will be a player to keep an eye on.

Players to Watch

Evansville North:

6'3" Junior Chandler Moore, 6'2' Junior Dom Redding, 6'5" Tristen Fisher

Hammond: 6'4" Junior Harold Woods, 6'7" Junior Darrell Reed, 5'7" Freshman Jakhorian Jones

Game Takes: Munster at Crown Point

0

The Recap: Munster scored the first 6 points of the game thanks to feeding senior big man Jeffrey Hemmelgarn in the post, as they dominated the contest from start to finish. Although they were patient, Crown Point had no answer for the Munster zone. Munster won 41-28.

Five Takes:

  • Munster’s zone gave Crown Point fits all night. So much so that they were held to 4 points in the 2nd quarter and held scoreless in the 3rd. Their pressure lead to turnovers and easy fast break buckets.
  • Crown Point was able to do most of its damage on offensive rebounds. They were very patient all night, but lack a true go-to scorer and shooter in a game like this to help take apart the zone. Young squad.
    • Junior Ty Smith led them in scoring with 9 points (Averaged 19).
  • Munster did a nice job of running their sets and getting good looks. Hemmelgarn scored 6 early points but didn’t score again until the 4th. He also added 4 blocks.
  • 6'3" Junior Luka Balac looked solid. Midrange game is there and can finish at the rim. Missed both 3’s he took, but shot is lefty smooth. He is strong and plays well through contact. Will create his own shot off the bounce.
  • It was a balanced effort offensively for Munster. Going forward it will be interesting to see who they go to when they need a big bucket down the stretch, or if Balac is that guy.
    • Senior PJ Katona led the Mustangs with 9 points and 5 steals.

Game Takes: Evansville Harrison vs Middletown OH

0

Evansville Harrison's schedule has been brutal to this point in the season. They opened with Jasper, Floyd Central, South Spencer, New Albany and Castle. The opening game of the Bosse Winter Classic put the Warriors against the Middletown (OH) Middies. Entering this game the Warriors were 1-4. The Warriors were able to come back and get the win after the Middies came back to take a 8 to 10 point lead and go up by 2 with 1:00 left in the game.

Take Aways
1. Harrison starts two Sophomores at Guard and each gave good minutes during the game. They will be excellent building blocks for the next couple of seasons.
2. Terrence Ringo a 6'5" Junior has an excellent frame and is very athletic. He has a decent outside shot and gets to the rim easily. He has a high ceiling if he puts in the work.
3. Sophomore Jahni Summers gave the Warriors good minutes. He shot well from behind the arc and ran a good transition game.

Game Takes: Brownsburg at Ben Davis

0

The Recap:  A 17-2 run from the mid of the third quarter into the fourth propelled Brownsburg from what was a tightly contested rock fight.  Both teams were physical defensively, but Pierce Thomas, Malek Edmonds and Connor Lucas all got going at the same time.  Brownsburg won 57-47.

Six Takes:

  • One focus around (for me at least) around central Indiana is the progression of Thomas. Last night he didn't shoot the ball as well in a couple of previous games I've seen, but the ball still looked good coming off his hands.  He's gaining more confidence in his shot, displayed in how he gets into his shots, while not taking bad shots.
    • His first basket of the night was a catch in transition at half court, getting to the basket in three dribbles for a dunk with some contact.  Further display of the physical attributes he has.
  • Edmonds is really good from mid-range, has good touch around the rim and hit a 3pter last night.  He's strong enough to be effective with his back to the basket at the HS level, but his feet are better facing the basket.
  • Lucas isn't afraid of taking big shots for Brownsburg, nor should he be.
  • Ben Davis couldn't get much going offensively until it was too late.  They were able to speed up Brownsburg in the second quarter and force them into turnovers, but they weren't able to turn enough of that into offense.
    • Only later in the game did Kai Steinmann hit shots, but they relied heavily on getting to the paint, which isn't reliable against Brownsburg without more outside shooting options.
  • Bobby Fry didn't have much room to operate last night, and while they do use ball screens, mostly to start possessions off sets, none appear to be random.
  • Jamari London didn't play last night for Ben Davis.

Game Takes: Crispus Attucks at Lawrence Central

0

The Recap: Lawrence Central jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Play was sloppy on both ends, but LC attacked and finished in transition.  Attucks is 0-2 vs. 4A teams, which is an issue because they are 4A due to the IHSAA 'success factor' clause.

Six Takes:

  • Lawrence Central played tonight without Nijel Pack. The 5'11" senior guard, committed to Kansas State, is reportedly nursing tendinitis. It opened the door for a more active DeAnte Davis, and he responded. 12 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists, Davis showed a higher level of playmaking.
  • Attucks was out of sorts from the start, and it didn't get much better. The ball stuck in the hands of Jason Hall and Sincere McMahon, two talented guards, and their offense stalled.
  • DeAndre Davis was his normal active self, and he was excellent leading the break.
  • Really want to see Jaylen Carson play with a better motor. The talented 6'6" junior forward is more skilled than he showed tonight, but Attucks has a slew of guards, pushing Carson's opportunities inside more.
    • Carson isn't a low post player, but he would be effective in drop offs or ball screen action. Attucks didn't get him involved much tonight.
  • Jason Graves, 6'1" senior guard, started strong. The transfer from Pike is a willing defender and unafraid to step into a shot. He also moves the ball when he doesn't have a play.

POTW: Week of December 9-December 15

0

56 seems like a lot of points right?  That's the number Gus Etchison put up in their 80-71 loss to Mt. Vernon, and heading into Saturday it was going to take a lot to top that.  Nick Anderson, 6'2" senior guard, is continuing to put up numbers for Lake Central, getting them through a couple of tough games last week.

Kooper Jacobi was the best player on the floor in the Silver Creek/Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian matchup at Southport on Saturday.  The 6'6" junior forward put up 36 points (26 in the first half) with 9 rebounds, single handedly keeping them in the game in the first half.  (Not that Caleb Furst wasn't impressive too for FWBC.).

Keon Thompson, 6'1" junior guard from Merrillville was impressive scoring 34 points in a win over Hammond Morton and 41 in a loss to Andrean.

All that said the Player of the Week (POTW) presented by Metro Indy Basketball is Jack Townsend.

This release from Coach Brent Dalrymple from North Daviess:

Jack Townsend Topples Two School Records at North Daviess

The record-breaking shooting of 6’1” senior guard, Jack Townsend, ND claimed a double-win weekend against visiting North Central (Farmersburg) and Vincennes Rivet.

Jack Townsend led the offense on Friday evening with 24 points in a 57-44 SWIAC conference affair versus the NC Thunderbirds.  The shooting guard dropped four three-pointers on a night when he made 9-15 shots from the field overall while contributing four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Saturday night, Townsend made eight three-pointers in the first half alone while registering 26 points before halftime.  Townsend’s numbers on Saturday night were:  a school-record 47 points on 13-19 shooting from 3 pt range, 4 steals, 3rebounds, and 1 assist for the Class of 2020 Division II Ohio Dominican signee as the Cougars rolled Vincennes Rivet 68-16.  Townsend tied the school’s single season three-point record a year ago as a junior with 62.  Through six games, the senior shooting guard has knocked in 29 of 61 attempts and is averaging nearly 24 points per game.

Game Takes: Silver Creek vs Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian

0

The Recap:  Behind junior center, Caleb Furst, Blackhawk Christian jumped out to a 10-2 lead, as Furst really went at Trey Kaufman hard.  Kaufman, 6’8” junior forward, spent much of the game in and out foul trouble.  Luckily for Silver Creek, Kooper Jacobi was the best player on the floor.

The 6’5” junior forward scored 26 of his 36 points in the first half and single handedly kept the 3A state champs in the game.  Kaufman’s second half was much improved, and Jacobi moved over to guard Furst, slowing his production down.  The Creek grabbed the lead and closed out a 78–74 victor.

Five Takes:

  • Furst has improved his agility, and his size bothered Kaufman on both ends of the floor. His footwork in the low post is excellent.  Furst will eventually become a plus-shooter for his position and is capable of a straight line drive and finish.
  • Furst moved over to guard Jacobi when Kaufman was on the bench and stayed on him for much of the second half.
  • Furst was better than Kaufman tonight, but Kaufman still showed some of what his potential is.  His 3pter midway through the 4th quarter pretty sealed the game for SC, and he’s able to handle the ball in transition, finding Jacobi a couple of times. Still see him as a skilled PF.
  • Not sure if it was knowing he had to step as Kaufman struggled early, but Jacobi was on a mission tonight.  He scored from all three levels and with a variety of finishes.  He attacked in transition, and in the half court, I’m not really sure he was passing it unless he driving into Furst.  There wasn’t anyone else on the floor he couldn’t finish over.  Jacobi moved over on Furst when Kaufman was down, and he bothered Furst.
  • Brandon Northern, 5’11” sophomore point guard, makes completes a nice trio for Silver Creek.

Game Takes: Carmel vs Evansville Reitz

0

The Recap:  Carmel’s offense opened up more, as young players are gaining confidence, and shots were falling.  It was an early 10-4 lead for Carmel, and it stayed in that range through the first half.  The second half was unkind to Reitz as Carmel pulled away and never let up, winning 63-37.

Four Takes:

  • Khristian Lander, 6’2” junior point guard, had a rough game, as Carmel sophomore guard Josh Whack hounded him the whole game.  Like his older brother, Whack will draw every team’s best non-post player—maybe even post players.
  • The main knock on Carmel’s Pete Suder coming into the season was his jump shot.  Hitting three 3pters in this game, that made five total for the weekend,  the 6’3” sophomore is transitioning from the high motor freshman starter on a state title team to a guard who will do a lot of everything the next three seasons.
  • Carmel has weapons.  With more experience, they become that much harder to guard in Carmel’s Motion.
  • Owen Dease, 6’6” junior forward for Reitz, is talented, but not having seen him during a school season it was hard to tell how he gets his offense.  He struggled getting open and wasn’t able to get much off the top of the key.

Game Takes: Brownsburg vs. Heritage Hills

0

The Recap:  A tight game until midway through the fourth, then Pierce Thomas and Conner Lucas exploded for Brownsburg!  A 3pt barrage took the score from 51-50 Heritage Hills to 72-51.  Brownsburg pulls away to a 72-54 win.

Four Takes:

  • Thomas’ jump shot is getting to the point where it’s looking consistent, and that changes things for Brownsburg’s outlook and in a lot of ways to his recruiting.  The one knock on the 6’5” junior guard has been his shot mechanics and his shooting.  Both are much improved and fluid.
  • Lucas, 6’1” senior guard, provides additional shooting for Brownsburg, and they get lockdown type defense from Luke Lacey, 6’1” junior point guard and Quentin Bragg, 6’0” junior guard.
  • Blake Sisley’s range is showing improvement as well.  The recruiting floor for the 6’9” junior forward for Heritage Hills is at the mid major level, but as he becomes “stretchier” with his range, do high majors start to take deeper looks?
  • Murray Becher, 6’4” senior guard, and Simon Scherry, 6’2” senior guard, both were playing well into the fourth, but they struggled as Brownsburg amped up the pressure.

Game Takes: Greensburg at Southport

0

The Recap:  Tight game the whole way.  Southport gets the largest second half lead of seven midway through the fourth. Greensburg cuts the lead to three with the ball, but they were unable to convert on a 3pt attempt by Lane Sparks.

Four Takes:

  • Sparks, 6’2” junior guard, one of the top shooters in the state, doesn’t take a 3pter until under a minute.  The crafty left-hander finishes at the rim well and is good from mid-range, but he’s too big of an asset behind the 3pt line to not get more volume.
  • Southport relying heavily on three freshmen—AJ Dancler, 6’1” guard; Anthony Ball, 6’6” forward; Keyon Miller, 6’1” point guard.
    • Dancler Was excellent off ball screens and made good decisions in transition.
    • Ball has a varsity caliber body already, rebounded and finished against contact.
    • Miller was their primary ball handler when Brevin Jefferson, 6’2” senior guard, wasn’t in the game.
  • Greensburg’s Andrew Welage, 6’7” senior guard (committed to Wright State) didn’t get much of a chance to operate in space/isolation.  He only had one 3pt attempt in the first half, burying a fall away at the halftime buzzer.
  • Matt Munoz, 6’6” senior forward for Southport, normally effective around the basket, hit well from mid-range.
