Indiana-Kentucky All-star Series Cancelled for 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE          Contact: Pat McKee, 317-403-1665
April 9, 2020                              IBCA Director of Special Projects

The Indiana-Kentucky All-Star basketball games have been cancelled for 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials from both states announced Thursday (April 9).
With governmental leadership in both states implementing stay-at-home mandates, schools being closed for the remainder of the academic year and group gatherings limited to 10 people are fewer through late May, Indiana game director Mike Broughton and Kentucky game director Scott Chalk jointly agreed that the All-Star series would not be contested in 2020.
All-Star leadership from both states understands the seriousness of this pandemic and supports measures being implemented by governmental leadership in both states. Thus with great disappointment, the All-Star leadership is canceling the All-Star competition for this year.
The cancellation includes the Indiana-Kentucky Senior Games (that were to be on June 5 at Great Crossing High School in Georgetown, Ky., and June 6 at Southport Fieldhouse in Indianapolis) and the Indiana-Kentucky Junior Games (that were to be on June 1 at Floyd Central High School).
On the Indiana side only, the cancellation also includes the Indiana Junior-Senior Games (that were to be on June 3, site not yet announced) and the All-Star Shootout for current high school teams (that was to be on June 6 at Ben Davis High School).
It is planned that all aspects of the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Series will resume in 2021. Tentative dates for the 2021 All-Star games will be June 4 in Kentucky and June 5 at Southport Fieldhouse.
“I am sad for the players and coaches who comprise this year’s All-Star teams,” Broughton said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the seniors who made the team, but they do have the satisfaction that they are an Indiana All-Star for life. “We wish all members of the 2020 All-Stars a great transition to college after their fantastic high school careers.”
Broughton also expressed gratitude to Perry Township Schools superintendent Patrick Mapes and Southport High School officials for their work on hosting the 2020 games that now will not be played.
“I want to thank Pat Mapes and Southport High School for their help in setting up this year’s games,” Broughton said. “All fans who purchased tickets for this year’s event at Southport will receive refunds.”
The boys’ portion of the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star series dates to 1940 with games being played in 78 of the 81 years. Games also were not played in 1943 and 1944 because of World War II. The girls’ portion of the All-Star series was added in 1976, and it had been contested for 44 consecutive years. This will be the first interruption in the girls’ series. The Indiana boys hold a 99-44 advantage in the games with Kentucky. The Indiana girls lead 50-38 in their series with the Bluegrass state.
The Indiana All-Stars were created in 1939 and played a game against the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs that year. The series against Kentucky was started in 1940.
Indiana-Kentucky Junior All-Star games have been contested five times over the past eight years. That series, with two games each year for boys and girls, has been played in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018 and 2019. The Indiana Junior Boys lead 6-4 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Junior Girls hold a 9-1 advantage in their series with Kentucky.
The Indiana Junior All-Stars were started in 1996. The Indiana Junior All-Stars have played exhibition games against the Indiana senior All-Stars for 25 years – 1996 through 2019. The Indiana senior boys and Indiana senior girls both hold 39-10 advantages in the Senior-Junior games.
The All-Star Shootout has been held on the day of the Indiana seniors’ home game against Kentucky each year starting in 2009. The Shootout is an event where high school teams each receive two “shootout games” for their teams in the morning or early afternoon. The players and coaches on those high school teams also receive a ticket to attend the Indiana-Kentucky senior games that evening as part of their participation in the Shootout.

Game Takes: Sectionals Wednesday

0

Raise your hand if you have Lawrence North jumping out to a 27 point lead!!

Rough gig for Lawrence Central this year.  They were undefeated this year outside of their vs. teams not from their own township.  Kudos to LN, as it's extremely tough to beat a team three times in a season.  They have Crispus Attucks coming up, which they beat by 8 earlier in the season.

Sectional Predictions Go Down

  • Northwestern beaten by West Lafayette
  • Fort Wayne Luers, which I had getting to the 3A finals, losing to Leo.

Comeback Specials

There might've been more, but Lake Central, Covenant Christian and Crispus Attucks survived double digit deficits in the first half to advance.  Attucks trailed Cathedral by 12 at halftime, while Covenant Christian was down to Howe by 15 at point.  Lake Central started in an 11-0 hole to Gary West.

On A Side Note

The loss to Covenant Christian doesn't just ends Howe's season.  It ends this era's  basketball program.  The school is closing...AGAIN...as the Indianapolis Public Schools system continues to dismantle its school district.

Game Takes: Jimtown Sectional

Jimtown Sectional

Marian vs. Washington

Game one saw a rematch from last Friday, in Marian vs. SB Washington, and the outcome was the same. Marian prevailed again. Washington had the game within 5 at half, but that's as close as it ever got the rest of the way.

Five Takes

  •  I've seen Marian 4 times now this season and I can say the same thing about how they play every game. Their zone defense is so tough. They can extend it full court if needed, and they have great length inside. Their offense is ran by senior guard, 6'2" Jerry Bracey  (19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) and freshman guard, 6' Deaglan Sullivan (17 points), although this team has great role players that do their jobs well.
  • Jerry Bracey knows how to attack, get to the basket, and finish at the rim. Loves finishing with his left hand. He even showed a little midrange game in this one as he pulled up at the elbows and hit a couple shots. Excellent handles and passer. Haven't seen him shoot anything outside the arc, but will definitely be playing somewhere at the next level.
  • 6'5" sophomore Kaleo Kakalia finally had a game that I had been waiting to see out of him. Had 10 points and a 4 rebounds. Solid game for him. The other games I've seen he usually finds himself in foul trouble, so it was good to see him step up in this one. They'll need him to again Friday vs. St. Joe.
  • I really like 6'3" sophomore Da'reon Thornton and 6'4" junior Ky'rell Franklin for Marian. These 2 are great role players with length and some size that give opposing teams fits on D. They rebound well and are guaranteed to get a steal and score or two and and clean up the glass for some offensive rebound put backs.
  • The 3 headed senior monster of Jylen Petty (6'6"), Janye Griffin (6'1"), and Demarcus Vaughn (6'4") just couldn't get things going consistently in this one. Petty finished with 14 and 8. Vaughn had 15 and 5. Griffin ended with 8 and 2. All of which were under season averages, but all had to do with the Marian defense. They just couldn't get it figured out. Solid guys who will probably all end up somewhere at the next level. Just got a tough first round draw.

John Glenn vs. Jimton

Game 2 saw a dog fight between two scrappy teams that both lack depth. Jimtown came up with the overtime win 53-50, and look to get to the sectional championship if they can get by SB Clay.

  • Led by 6'7" senior Preston Phillips and his 23 points and 8 rebounds the Jimmies were able to close this one out in the end. He has some interest from local NAIA schools and I wouldn't be surprised if smaller D1s didn't take a look to maybe fill a PWO spot or maybe redshirt. Upside is there with his size and length.

Game Takes: Sectional Tuesday – Review

0

See our Game Take from the Noblesville Sectional, and now a look around at the rest of the state.

Sectional Picks Done Early

North Posey dropping Evansville Mater Dei is right up there.  North Posey has been up and down most of the season, but when you have the best player on the floor you always have a chance.  Josiah Ricketts is that guy.

Mater Dei came with a better record on a tougher schedule, so it reasoned they were definitely a favorite in this game in what looked to be a pretty balanced sectional.

Covington jumped up and beat Lafayette Central Catholic.  How big of a loss is this for LCC?  This is only the third time in the class basketball era LCC hasn't won their sectional.  THIS matchup, by far, was the anticipated sectional final, and people who cry for seeding could point to this game.  It didn't matter when they faced each other.

Tri-Central losing to Wes-Del.  OK...not an overwhelming favorite, but Tri-Central entered with the best record by at least three games.

Winamac outgunning Lewis Cass in a high scoring affair.

Some Surprises

Frankfort over Greencastle is the biggest of this bunch.  At six wins, Frankfort didn't have a successful season, and Greencastle had a strong season playing good schools outside of their conference schedule.

Ben Davis losing to Southport isn't as big of a surprise, but they were favored.  The Giants have been largely inconsistent, but their schedule stacks up better vs. Southport's, and their losses were more competitive.

No one should be too surprised when Twin Lakes jumps up and upsets someone, and they have found a lot of success of late in March.  However, Peru has been excellent most of the year, their best in nearly a decade.

Jennings County over New Albany.  New Albany has been battling injuries all year, and they are relative young, but JC relies on a freshman too.

The One Possession or OT Games

  • We gave you Zionsville at the buzzer over Fishers, but scores in the 20's isn't too exciting outside of the finish.
  • Center Grove avenged a loss to Franklin Central just a couple of weeks ago.
  • Both games at Jimtown
    • Mishawaka Marian over South Bend Washington
    • Jimtown in OT over John Glenn
  • Both games at Shortridge
    • Manual in OT over the host
    • Brebeuf over Guerin Catholic
  • OT losses by host underdogs
    • Vincennes Lincoln to Washington
    • Boonville to Evansville Memorial
  • Tri squeezes by Union City
  • Edinburgh, led by freshman Caleb Dewey, wins over Trinity Lutheran

Game Takes: Noblesville Sectional

0

Noblesville Sectional

While the Zionsville/Fishers game was a rock fight--Zionsville 23, Fishers 21 -- it provided for a great fourth quarter.

Five Takes

  • Jackson Hughes, 6'5" senior forward, obviously made the play of the game, the high banking shot the goes in as the buzzer sounds.  Chaos ensued!
    • Hughes, who transferred in from Rensselaer Central over the summer, has given them versatility up front.  He's freed up Anthony Scales a little, and Zionsville rarely has rotations where they don't have two of Hughes, Scales and Gunnar Vannatta.
  • The play that turned the tide for Zionsville, which was down five at the time -- freshman guard Logan Imes drives baseline, goes behind his back, forcing help from Vannatta's defender then drops a dime to Vannatta who gathered and dunked.
    • This is the third time I've seen Zionsville where Imes' play turned the tide of the game.  More of Imes = good
  • Given the pace of the game, Vannatta was very effective.  Ignore raw totals.  He was the main influence in the game on both ends.
  • Neither team had any outside shooting, or at least not enough for their top shooters to be covered.  Alex Szilagyi may have only gotten three shots the entire game for Fishers.  The only other three they hit was from Isaac Farah, 6'8" senior center, who hit a corner 3.
    • Zionsville, playing without Ben Weidner since he tore his ACL...I don't even recall if they took a 3.
  • Jeffrey Simmons, 6'6" sophomore forward, struggled against Zionsville's size.  He got a lot of touches in the high post vs. Zionsville's zone and not once did he look to hit the shot or score.  Most of his scoring efforts came from stationary or cuts to the low post, where he was swallowed up by Vannatta.

Carmel led most of the game vs. Hamilton Southeastern, but it was never truly in control until the final 90 seconds, as Carmel won 50-43.

Game Takes

  • I said heading into the fall Carmel will be as good as Brian Waddell is.  The 6'6" junior wing had a great June, and while it doesn't mean everything, it was telling to what he could be in a bigger role.  He was sick then injured to start the year, and Carmel struggled to score.  Since his return, Carmel has been very efficient.
    • Waddell had 19 points last night.
  • Kole Hornbuckle, 6'5" senior wing, was equally impressive for HSE.  He scored the game's first basket, spent the rest of the first half at the FT line, then took over a stretch in the second half.
  • HSE got nothing outside of the paint last night, and Carmel made Mabor Majak, 7'2" senior center, work for every catch then work for every shot.  He one contested shot that was "easy", a smooth righty hook over Charlie Williams.  Everything else when he wasn't clean had to be a double move or battle through a double team.
  • HSE won on Valentine's Day by crushing Carmel on the offensive glass.  I don't know the  rebound totals this time around, but that didn't happen until the fourth quarter.  As it did start to happen, it felt like that would put HSE over the hump as Hornbuckle really got going, but they couldn't convert.
    • They had three possessions in the mid-fourth quarter with multiple looks at the basket.  I'm not sure they scored on any of them.

Game Takes: Carmel 75, Crispus Attucks 52

0

The Recap  Behind the shooting of senior guard Jackson Jannsen, Carmel jumped to early double digit lead and never looked back.

Four Takes

  • It's a myth that Carmel just like to slow the game down.  Carmel can play fast, and while they can also possess the ball without "holding it", they guard so well they slow down their opponent too.  Now that they're fully healthy it would open more opportunities for them.  Here's why:
    • It frees up shooters Jannsen and Brian Waddell more.  Jannsen is one the best shooters in the state.  Waddell, at 6'6", has more shots in his bag, but getting him free in transition or earlier in possessions has been more of an option as he's gotten back into game shape.
    • The tempo created more opportunities for Peter Suder to be that 'motor' guy like he was all of last year.  Suder had several offensive put backs last night.  It's not that he has lacked a motor this year.  He's just in a different role.  Last night he put everything on display.
      • BTW...more tempo gets him cleaner looks too with his new found 3pt shot.
    • Of course, Crispus Attucks tried to speed them up, which increased possessions, and Carmel over the last decade especially, has been very good at turning someone's defense into their offense.
  • While Crispus Attucks sped the game up, they couldn't really turn Carmel over.  Carmel has struggled vs. pressure in past games, but it's never been just about quickness.  It's been about physicality and quickness.  On the whole, Attucks has the quickness.  They could not displace Carmel in the half court.
  • Carmel pressed and trapped, and Crispus Attucks dribbled into traps.  Other than the first couple of baskets in each half (Jaylen Carson, Tyran Rodgers), Crispus Attucks couldn't exploit it on the back end.  To beat Carmel you have to beat them at the rim.
  • Carson battled foul trouble much of the game, but he was able to make enough plays to show off his talent.  Whether if it was fouls or frustration, he disappeared in stretches.  Crispus Attucks is better when he's getting more touches.

POTW: Week of February 17-February 23

0

Offers are mounting for Chris Mantis.  The 6'6" junior guard continues to play well for Lowell, and in their win over Hammond Morton he totaled 21 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds.

In one of their tougher games of the season, Blackford's Luke Brown does what he always does, put up numbers--31 points, 7 assists, 6 steals and 4 rebounds.  The night before over Southern Wells, he totaled 19 points and 11 assists.

Trey Kaufman, the 6'8" junior forward from Silver Creek, had a stellar week too, 30 points, 9 rebounds in a win over Austin, and he topped it off in a win over Corydon Central with 39 points and 14 rebounds.

However, the Player of the Week (POTW) presented by Metro Indy Basketball for the week of February 17-February 23 is Johnell Davis from Gary 21st Century.

The 6'2" senior guard, who is headed to Florida Atlantic, is second in the state in scoring (among those reported to MaxPreps), and this week didn't hurt his 32.2 ppg.

In their big win against highly rated and sectional foe Kouts, Johnell had 38 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocks, and in their win over Victory Christian Johnell had 31 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists and 1 block.

Others Considered

  • Gus Etchison, 6'0" junior guard; Hamilton Heights
    • vs Lafayette Central Catholic - 22 points and 7 assists
    • vs Tri-West - 29 points and 7 assists
  • Jylen Petty, 6'7" senior forward; South Bend Washington
    • vs Elkhart Central - 29 points, 6 rebounds
  • Kaden Stanton, 6'0" sophomore guard; New Albany
    • vs Bedford North Lawrence - 21 points
    • vs Evansville North - 21 points, 4 assists and 0 turnovers
      • Also noted, Kaden carries a 4.0 GPA

Others Nominated

  • Trey Flatt, 6'0" junior guard; Covenant Christian
  • Hagen Knepp, 6'3" sophomore guard; Barr-Reeve
  • Ethan Maudlin, 5'10" senior guard; Covenant Christian
  • Malachi Pearson, 6'4" junior guard; Logansport
