Cathedral has now won this game 20 straight times, and staring off on a 21-2 run pretty much propelled them to the win.  The Irish stretched the lead to as high as 23. However, Brebeuf cut it to 10 by the end of the 3rd quarter.  Cathedral scored the first three possessions of the 4th quarter, and that ended much of the suspense.

  • Tayshawn Comer's maturation as a floor general showed out tonight for Cathedral.  His understanding of pace is the major cause of that, able to use his body to ward off defenders as he changes speeds.
  • First good look at Jaxson Edwards.  The 6'5" junior wing was outstanding on both ends of the floor (more on him in a later posting--Tuesday likely).  He, along with Vince Brady, 6'4" senior wing (Air Force commit) are as good of a pair of two-way wings as there is in the state.  Both are excellent defenders.
  • Once Brebeuf started to get traction, it was Evan Altman keeping the game from totally getting away.  He was a force around the paint and finishing plays in transition.
  • Billy Smith got going more in the second half, and that's what helped Brebeuf start to cut into the lead.  His shot really quickens up during game action, vs. watching him in pre-game, and it was fluid off the catch and off the dribble.
  • Turnovers and missed opportunities around the basket is what doomed Brebeuf to start the game.  That's a big credit to Cathedral's pressure.  They sped up Brebeuf, and to compound it, they took four charges in the first half.  Jake Davis, 6'6" sophomore, took three or four on his own through the game.
