Home Game Center Game CenterGame Takes Game Takes: Cathedral 55, Carmel 47 By Jim R - January 13, 2023 FacebookTwitterReddIt An early 7-2 deficit prompted a Cathedral timeout, which responded with a 7-0 run to end the quarter. They stretched it to a 12-0 run before Carmel got on the board again, leading 19-17 at the half. Carmel started the second half with a 6-0, and as the game tempo started to pick up, so did the production of Jaron Tibbs, Jake Davis and Kamari Slaughter. Jaron Tibbs has become more and more Cathedral's goto scorer. The WR Purdue recruit would've been a D1 basketball recruit had he desired to do so. He hit from the 3PT line and finished like a bull, getting downhill. Cathedral, by design or happen stance, found success out of Tibbs cutting off mid-post catches, constantly putting pressure on Carmel's smaller perimeter defenders to keep Tibbs and others out of the paint. The other physical presence for Cathedral was Slaughter. The transfer from Portage has been up and down for Cathedral, but when he gets downhill, he has the strength, footwork and feel around the rim to finish through traffic and contact. Davis had struggled from distance the last two games (last two that I saw), he was back to his old self vs. Carmel, especially in the second half. Cathedral did most of their damage with Xavier Booker on the bench. His first points didn't come until late in the second quarter, scoring off a loose ball that found its way to him near the paint. He struggled to guard Carmel's off ball movement. Sam Orme didn't get going on the offensive end until the fourth quarter, but he was effective defensively and keeping Booker away from the basketball. Orme had good looks, but he had some shots do everything but drop. He at one point scored 7 straight for Carmel and dragged them back into it. Logan Reinhart, 6'0" senior guard, kept Carmel in it in the first half, hitting two 3PTers, including the final basket of the second half. Spencer White and Alex Couto got going in the second half, both joining Orme in double figures.
